Carol Singing in the Parish 2015

Carol Singing in the Parish

I am now of an age where I can look back and reflect on some of my earliest memories. I can remember the joy of finding a sock at the end of the bed filled with oranges, nuts and a mouth organ, knowing full well that Father Christmas had really visited our home. However, one of the greatest pleasures was the build up to Christmas. Our Church always had a magical candlelit Carol Service and a few days later we went carol singing. I am unable to explain why this was such a highlight. It may have been that we were now old enough to join the adults and stay up late. It may have been that we felt such a close community, or it may have had something to do with the food and drink we were offered at each home after we had sung our share of carols! Whatever the reason, it was the most magical build up to Christmas. This year we had friends staying with us. They had two young children enjoying the build up to Christmas. We invited them to join us Carol singing in Cumwhitton. I am sure that the joy we had will now become a lasting memory for them, too. This year the weather, although cold, remained dry for most of the time. Our little band of singers holding lanterns and torches went from house to house where we were met with such hospitality and generosity. The evening ended at The Pheasant Inn where diners were polite enough to applaud our efforts. The donations made were extremely generous and they will go towards funding the annual Christmas party held in the village hall for children of the Parish.
In Hornsby we gathered around the village Christmas tree to sing our traditional carols, again the weather was kind and it was so heartening to see such a joyous crowd. It is fast becoming a tradition of Hornsby to have a get together where residents bring a variety of festive treats that make up a fabulous buffet at Peter’s home. This year was extra special as Mr Baxter senior entertained us with a medley of well known tunes on his key board. What a pleasure! I feel certain that such occasions will provide the special memories for the next generation growing up in our Parish. Long may it continue! Thank you to all, those who sang as best they could, those who had to listen and all those who were so generous with their contributions.
